Mastering Halfway Breathing: Unlocking Effortless Movement and Inner Calm

This week at the Systema Academy, we worked on a transformative breath-work practice that always has a profound effect: Halfway Breathing. Vladimir shared this method during lockdown as a powerful tool to facilitating ease and reducing tension.

What is Halfway Breathing?

Halfway Breathing is a method of timing your breath to switch from inhale to exhale at approximately the midpoint of a movement. So for example with a squat you would begin with an inhale, then start the movement. Then just at the point where tension, strain or a breath catch comes in you switch to an exhale. The effect is that the exhale, ‘clears a path’ to make the movement smoother and easier with less strain.

The Benefits

Reduced Tension and Effort: Using halfway breathing I have seen countless people shocked at how much easier it made a movement. Much smoother and less strenuous.

Enhanced Sensitivity and Intuition: Initially, you may practice switching your breath mechanically at the halfway point. However, the next step lies in developing a deep, intuitive understanding of your body and breath. You begin to feel the natural point to switch, guided by your body’s signals rather than a rigid rule. This may be before or after the half way point. The ideal is where there is no, ‘spike’ in pressure or tension, the movement feels the same all the way through.

Unconscious Competence: The ultimate goal is for this to become an unconscious skill. As you train, your body learns to adjust and switch breathing automatically, optimizing your internal state for calmness and ease. This not only enhances your physical movements but also cultivates a state of mental peace and tranquility.

Practical Application

In class, we practice Halfway Breathing through various exercises. But its benefits extend far beyond. As you integrate this technique into everyday life, you’ll notice a smoother, more composed approach to both physical and mental challenges. Your interactions become smoother and calmer, reducing stress and strain on yourself and others, and fostering a state of calm, even in demanding or tense situations.

Join us at the Academy or meet Vladimir in Person!

Experiencing this firsthand can be a transformative step in your personal journey. If you’re ready to explore this powerful technique and many others, I invite you to join us at the Systema Academy. Move with Ease, Freedom and Power: The Path to Optimal Health and Combat Effectiveness

Last week I had my 1-1 with Vladimir and as always the conversation was light, illuminating and insightful.

Vladimir shared his insights into movement, how it should feel and how that can enhance your skills and quality of life.

As we gear up for his upcoming Movement Masterclass in September, I wanted to share some of these thoughts and ideas with you.

Three stages of Movement Mastery

1. Internal Freedom: The Breath

The journey to free movement begins internally, with the breath. Vladimir emphasized the importance of checking if you feel freedom inside yourself. Are you already experiencing tension that locks you up? Start in a static position by observing the free movement of your breath in and out of your body. Notice if it flows effortlessly or feels forced and restricted. The key here is simple: if your breath doesn’t feel free, it will be challenging to find freedom in your movement.

2. Freedom in Body Parts

Once you’ve assessed your breath, the next step is to examine the different parts of your body. Vladimir explained that you need to check if there is freedom in the movement of your head and neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, torso, waist, hips, knees, and ankles. Do any areas feel restricted or painful? The goal is to move these parts in a way that creates space rather than restriction, just like the ‘play’ in a gearstick.

This is also the way to move to begin the healing process around injuries.

3. Freedom in Action

The third stage is to test that freedom of movement when the “tires hit the tarmac.” This involves maintaining that feeling of internal freedom during progressively more challenging movements, such as walking, running, push-ups, squats, leg raises, and ground movements at various speeds. Can you sustain that freedom when performing these activities?

But it doesn’t stop there. Vladimir challenges us to maintain this freedom when interacting with others, such as when someone grabs you or during sparring. Do fast, aggressive movements bring tension to your body, whether they come from yourself or another person? Does aggression or confrtontation itself make you tense? This emotion will take away your freedom.

The Lens of Movement

Our body and movements are the lens through which we see and experience the world. If your movement is free, relaxed, easy and calm , that is how you will experience life. Conversely, if your movements are tense, effortful, choppy, erratic, and restricted, that will colour your perception of the world.

Join the Journey: Movement Masterclass

In the upcoming Movement Masterclass, Vladimir will guide us through finding freedom inside our movements. We will begin with solo drills, progress to partner drills, and then test our skills in more dynamic scenarios such as grabs, multiple opponents and knife work. This holistic approach ensures that we not only understand the principles intellectually but also embody them physically.

This week at the Academy, I will be incorporating these concepts into our classes. I invite you to explore these ideas and begin your journey towards freer movement. Together, let’s prepare for the profound experiences that await us in September.

By integrating these insights and practices into daily life, you can unlock a more optimal level of movement and life experience. I look forward to seeing you in class and at the masterclass in September.

Here’s to moving freely, living fully, and see the world through the lens of freedom and calm.

What’s on offer at the Systema Academy

www.matthill.co.uk offers a comprehensive array of self-defence classes, relaxation, movement and breathing classes. These classes uniquely incorporate the principles of Systema, a Russian martial art renowned for its holistic and adaptive techniques. Systema, unlike many traditional martial arts, focuses on natural movements, relaxation, and efficient biomechanics, making it accessible and effective for individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

At Matt Hill’s training Academy, students are immersed in a supportive environment where the emphasis is placed on developing practical skills that can be applied in real-world situations. The self-defence classes cover a wide range of scenarios, teaching participants how to defend themselves against armed and unarmed attackers, manage multiple assailants, and handle high-stress situations with calm and control.

Matt Hill, a certified Systema instructor with years of experience, guides students through the nuances of this martial art. His teaching methodology is grounded in the belief that self-defence is not just about physical prowess but also about cultivating mental resilience and emotional stability. Students learn to harness their natural instincts, improve their awareness, and develop a deeper understanding of their bodies’ capabilities.

In addition to self-defence classes, www.matthill.co.uk offers combat classes, breathing classes, movement classes and sports massage services. The combat classes are designed to enhance physical conditioning and tactical skills, providing a robust and challenging workout that complements the self-defence training. Breathing classes focus on the core principles of Systema, teaching techniques to manage stress, improve endurance, and enhance overall well-being. These breathing and movement exercises are integral to mastering the art of relaxation and efficient movement.

The sports massage services cater to athletes and individuals seeking to maintain peak physical condition. These massages help alleviate muscle tension, prevent injuries, and promote faster recovery, ensuring that students can train effectively and sustainably.

The classes at www.matthill.co.uk are structured to cater to both beginners and advanced practitioners. Beginners are introduced to the fundamental principles of Systema, including breathing techniques, posture, and movement. As they progress, they are exposed to more complex drills and sparring sessions, allowing them to refine their skills and gain confidence in their ability to protect themselves.

Advanced students benefit from personalised training plans that challenge their existing skills and push them to new heights. They engage in rigorous practice sessions that simulate real-life encounters, helping them to test their limits and prepare for any eventuality.

Moreover, the website offers additional resources such as instructional videos, articles, and workshops, providing a well-rounded learning experience for those interested in deepening their knowledge of Systema. Whether you’re looking to enhance your self-defence skills, improve your fitness, or explore a new martial art, www.matthill.co.uk offers a unique and effective approach that blends traditional wisdom with modern practicality.

Breath for Energy and Vitality

The first course of the year at the Systema Academy will run on Jan 20th from 14.00-15.30.

The seminar will be run on both zoom and in person.

You can also sign up to receive the recordings.

The theme will be Breathwork for Energy and Vitality.

All of us feel low in energy from time to time.

Especially at this time of the year.

Sometimes we need a quick boost to get through.

Mentally, Physically and Emotionally.

Chocolate is an option, as is red bull, but they have their obvious downsides!

A better option is some simple breath and movement exercises that can optimise your energy levels quickly without the resultant calorific intake or the inevitable slump after the sugar rush leaves the body.

In this short seminar I will share the breath patterns to give you that quick boost and also share how to maintain a consistent flow of breath (energy) that adapts to your daily activity sustaining and energising you as you go about your day.

This allows you to do more work than you might imagine, and feel better at the end of it.

I notice more and more now that things that used to make me fatigued don’t anymore. Things like chopping logs, stacking them, sawing, climbing trees etc.

This is not because I am fit but because my body doesn’t work against itself. I don’t tense and tighten my muscles or restrict my breath. the flow of breath (energy), remains constant.

When the body is full of breath it is full of energy.

However the body can be like a bucket with holes in it, if you are not careful your energy can leak out faster than you can replace it.

A conscious awareness of this process through training becomes an unconscious competence.

Often, just knowing that you have the knowledge and skill to change your physiology is a game-changer.

You can book onto the seminar below to attend in person and/or receive the recording:

All my very best as always,

Matt.
